Loial is a mountain of a traveler, but his enormous eyes and restless, tufted ears make him seem more tender than fearsome. Beneath the road dust and the rumble of his voice is a thoughtful gentleness, as though the world is a story he is always eager to hear properly.

Loial, son of Arent and grandson of Halan, leaves the stedding despite the expectations of his elders, drawn by the wider world and its unfolding history. His friendship with Rand and the other young travelers grows into a steadfast bond, and his knowledge of Ogier lore and the Ways repeatedly proves invaluable. Though he worries that he is too young and too hasty, he finds courage in loyalty, friendship, and the stories he longs to preserve.
Description
Loial is an immense, very tall Ogier, his head nearly reaching ceiling beams and his broad build filling a room. Long dark hair falls to the collar of his dark, road-stained coat, while a wide, flattened nose, enormous round eyes, and long brows trailing over his cheeks give his face an unmistakable gentleness. His long, expressive ears end in tufts and often betray his feelings before he speaks; a little beard down softens his chin. He wears a long coat and carries a bulky leather satchel with a rolled blanket, and his huge hands and deep, resonant presence complete the impression of a kindly giant.
