Mikal looks as though fear has stripped away every last bit of composure: pale, unwashed, and diminished inside clothes that no longer fit him. Even his once-fine coat, bright with gold buttons, is overwhelmed by the stains of an ordinary, unruly life.

A merchant from So Habor, Mikal is encountered in a state of visible distress, his former bulk reduced to a gaunt frame beneath slack, hanging skin. His fear shows plainly in his pale, unwashed face, while his badly stained coat hints at how far his appearance has slipped from respectability. The book offers no further account of his fate or his life beyond this unsettling glimpse.
Description
Mikal is a man whose once-full body has become sharply wasted, leaving loose, baglike skin hanging from his frame. His face is pale with fear and unwashed, its disheveled look accentuating his strained, diminished appearance. He wears a blue wool coat now badly stained with wine and food, its gilded buttons offering a trace of former neatness. He gives the impression of a merchant whose composure and polish have both come undone.
