He looks like a weather-beaten old fisherman, all bent fingers, a battered nose, and a grin with more gaps than teeth. Yet beneath the worn blue jacket there is a suggestion of coiled readiness, and his quiet movements invite a second look.

Noal arrives as a stooped old wanderer in a shabby blue jacket, carrying a basket and fishing rod, with a broken nose and few teeth to complete his harmless-looking appearance. Beneath that disguise he keeps two long knives, and his age has not dulled his ability to move with startling quiet. His stories and companionship make him an intriguing ally to Mat and the others. In the end, Noal's courage gives his long, battered life a final measure of meaning.

Description

Noal is a bony, stooped old man with gray hair, a nose broken and bent to one side, and a gap-toothed grin. His hands are especially distinctive: knotted, crooked fingers with joints that look as if they have been broken repeatedly. He wears a faded, worn dark-blue jacket, usually with a woven basket and bamboo fishing rod close at hand; two long knives are concealed beneath his clothes. Though his frame is bent with age, he moves with a quiet nimbleness that complicates his harmless fisherman’s look.
