Mikhail seems to experience the world through a sense most people can scarcely imagine: odors arrive with the force and texture of color and sound. The filters at his nostrils and the metal token at his throat give him an unmistakably unusual presence, part boy and part finely tuned instrument.

Mikhail Kobrin is a young mutant whose experimental alteration gives him extraordinary smell, experienced as color and sound through a transformed nasal passage. At eighteen, he crosses into 1992 wearing unfamiliar old-fashioned clothes; in another glimpse, he is thirteen, still carrying the metal Sign of Independence his mother gave him. The trained, physically capable boy moves through a childhood shaped by difference, with the filters in his nostrils and his exceptional senses setting him apart. His story holds together the disorientation of time and the intimate vulnerability of a child growing into his unusual gifts.
Description
Mikhail’s appearance varies with age: he is described both as a fit eighteen-year-old and as a thirteen-year-old boy. Synthetic gas filters sit in his nostrils, a visible reminder of his altered nasal passages, and a metal Sign of Independence hangs from a chain at his neck. His clothing includes an old-style jacket with a targeting watch at the wrist in one appearance, and a simple shirt with melodic sneakers in another. As a younger boy, he has a scraped face, split lip, and bleeding nose; his hair, eyes, and skin tone are not specified.
