Liet Kynes begins as the Empire’s planetologist on Arrakis, but his deepest loyalties and imagination are bound to the Fremen and their long hope for a transformed world. He becomes a bridge between imperial authority and desert life, carrying forward the ecological vision inherited from his father. His daughter Chani belongs to the intimate world he leaves behind, while his death in the desert fixes his legacy in the people and dream he served.
Description
Kynes is tall and thin, with long sandy hair, a sparse beard, and an elfin face marked by a high forehead, thick brows, and a prim, straight mouth. His eyes are fathomless blue-within-blue, with dark stains smudged around their sockets. He wears a loose desert robe over a stillsuit with low boots; his hood is thrown back and a veil hangs to one side, revealing an old-style dark brown Imperial Civil Servant uniform with epaulets and a tiny gold teardrop at the collar. A copper hare pin clasps his robe, lending a precise, slightly formal note to his spare and watchful presence. No physical appearance is described. The text establishes the Judge of the Change as an authority figure, but gives no details of face, build, age, clothing, coloring, or manner. Any more specific visual portrayal would be invented.
