Barty Crouch Sr. is a formidable Ministry official whose rigid devotion to order shapes both his public authority and his private life. His son’s conviction as a Death Eater and his wife’s desperate efforts to see the boy again leave Crouch bound to a painful family history he tries to keep buried. In the present, the strain of that past shows through his immaculate exterior, and his path ultimately collides with the return of Voldemort and the truth Harry uncovers. Crouch’s story is one of discipline pushed toward mercilessness, and of a father whose choices cannot contain what he has tried to control.

Description

Crouch is an elderly, stiffly upright man with a ghostly pale, taut face and sharp eyes that can dart with startling intensity. His short gray hair is parted in an almost unnaturally straight line, above a narrow toothbrush mustache trimmed with exacting care. He wears crisp formal suits and ties, and his shoes are highly polished. When agitated, his hands and mustache twitch, disrupting the rigidly controlled presence he otherwise maintains. Crouch has a thin, worn appearance, with wrinkled skin that seems papery and dark shadows beneath his eyes. His face looks gaunt, almost skull-like when half-hidden in shadow. A toothbrush mustache and severe hair parting give his features a rigidly deliberate finish. He wears wizard’s robes, and his drawn, eerie presence is intensified by the darkness around him.
