Ali ibn Abi Talib entered Islamic history as the fourteen-year-old cousin of Muhammad who became one of the earliest converts to the new faith. His youthful courage was demonstrated when he slept in the Prophet's bed to deceive assassins. As he matured, he displayed both valor and humanity in battle, most notably mounted on a piebald horse and wielding a ponderous two-edged sword while shouting 'Allah Akbar' four hundred times. His life ended with a mortal wound from a Charegite assassin in the mosque of Cufa, though his significance as the lawful successor of the Prophet would echo through Islamic history.
