Baian, known as Chagan Baian or the Avar Khagan, ruled during the brightest era of Avar monarchy and threatened Constantinople itself. He occupied the rustic palace of Attila, deliberately imitating the conqueror's character and policy while developing a taste for Roman luxury. His elaborate oath-taking on his sword and his first encounter with an elephant marked him as a ruler bridging nomadic traditions with imperial ambitions.
