Bajazet I, known as Bayazid the Lightning or Ilderim, was an Ottoman Sultan whose fiery energy and rapid conquests earned him his fearsome reputation. Afflicted with gout in his hands and feet, he was transported from battlefields on the fleetest horses, maintaining the qualities of a soldier and chief. His reign ended in defeat at Ankara by Timur, after which he was captured and imprisoned in an iron cage, ultimately dying of apoplexy.
