Calil Basha served as prime vizier to Mahomet II, a position that placed him at the heart of Ottoman power during the final siege of Constantinople. Though publicly loyal to the sultan, he was known among Christians as their secret friend, and his final counsel warned that the young conqueror would show no mercy to the city. His role as advisor placed him between the demands of duty and his private sympathies.
Description
A distinguished Ottoman vizier with olive skin and a well-groomed beard, wearing the elaborate robes and turban of high office. His intelligent eyes and careful bearing suggest a man accustomed to wielding power while keeping his own counsel.
