Godfrey of Bouillon began as Duke of Lorraine and count of Boulogne descent, inheriting the Brabant title and receiving ducal investiture from the emperor. He bore the great standard of the empire and distinguished himself in battle, piercing Rodolph with his lance and being the first to ascend the walls of Rome. During the First Crusade, he led the crusader forces to victory at Jerusalem, becoming its first king and known as Defender and Baron of the Holy Sepulchre. His journey was marked by both his magnanimous piety and the physical trials of his quest, including being torn by a bear during a hunt in the mountains of Pisidia.
Description
A powerfully built crusader knight with the bearing of nobility and the scars of warfare. He wears chain mail armor beneath a white surcoat marked with a red cross, and carries himself with the authority of both a duke and a crusader leader. His face is weathered from years of campaigning, with strong features and piercing eyes that reflect both martial experience and religious devotion. His muscular frame speaks to a life of battle, and he bears the marks of a bear attack from his time in Pisidia.
