Gordian I rose as Roman Emperor in his advanced years, a proconsul of venerable age whose life had been devoted to scholarship and letters. Descended from the Gracchi on his father's side and Trajan on his mother's, he brought elegant taste and beneficent disposition to the imperial role. His reign ended in tragedy when he committed suicide following his son's death in battle.
