Hermogenes served as master-general of the cavalry, entrusted with the delicate task of banishing Paul from Constantinople. His mission ended in tragedy when the palace was consumed and he was dragged through the streets by a mob, his lifeless corpse exposed to insults. He was also known as a friend of Julian, well-versed in Greek poetry.
