Hugh of Burgundy was drawn into the complex politics of 10th-century Rome through his alliance with Marozia's faction. Introduced into the Castle of St. Angelo as a potential power broker, his attempt to assert authority ended disastrously when he struck Alberic during a nuptial banquet. His subsequent retreat marked the failure of his intervention in Roman affairs.
Description
Hugh of Burgundy presents the image of a medieval king with a stocky, powerful build and the ruddy complexion of his northern origins. His thinning light brown hair and short beard frame features that speak of both royal dignity and the strain of political maneuvering. He wears the rich burgundy robes and golden crown befitting his status as King of Burgundy.
