Hugh of Vermandois, brother to the king of France, emerged as one of the most prominent nobles to take up the cross during the First Crusade. His royal connections made him conspicuous among the crusader princes, though his journey east proved unfortunate when he was captured by the Greeks. His capture and the scattering of the foremost vessels by tempest marked the unfortunate end of his crusading ambitions.
Description
Hugh of Vermandois embodies the aristocratic bearing of French royalty, with refined features and the dark hair of the Capetian line showing touches of gray. His middle-aged frame carries the dignity of his royal bloodline, while his clothing reflects both his crusading purpose and his noble status. He possesses the unmistakable presence of a man born to privilege and accustomed to authority.
