Olympius began as a philosopher who rallied pagans to defend the altars of Serapis at Alexandria, then transformed into a crafty minister at the court of Honorius. Concealing his ambitions beneath a mask of Christian piety, he became the power behind the throne, dictating religious policy and ultimately betraying his benefactor in the complex religious and political struggles of the late fourth century.
