Wealth clings to this ecclesiastical figure like a second skin, his bearing suggesting someone more accustomed to the exercise of power than the practice of humility. His presence fills a room with the unmistakable aura of authority backed by material comfort.

Paul of Samosata rose to become Bishop of Antioch through means that raised questions about the intersection of spiritual authority and worldly ambition. His wealth became evidence of impropriety, while his use of ecclesiastical jurisdiction appeared venal to his critics. For four years he maintained possession of the episcopal house through the favor of Zenobia, queen of Palmyra, until his deposition ended this unusual chapter in church governance.
Description
Paul of Samosata presents a figure of substantial build whose wealthy appearance marks him as a bishop of considerable means. His olive skin and dark hair and beard are complemented by ornate ecclesiastical robes embroidered with gold thread. Rings adorn his fingers, and his bearing carries the authority of one accustomed to both spiritual and temporal power. The richness of his attire and the comfort of his surroundings reflect his position in the wealthy city of Antioch.
