Paul of Constantinople began as the Orthodox bishop of the imperial capital with firm attachment to the Nicene creed. His position as patriarch made him a target for the Arian faction, leading to his being dragged in chains from Mesopotamia to Mount Taurus. Despite his reputation as a mild usurper and his noted moderation, he was eventually strangled by order of Philip and died in exile after sixteen years of banishment, first in Petra, Arabia, then the Oasis in the Libyan desert, and finally in Upper Egypt.
Description
A Byzantine bishop with the dignified bearing of patriarchal authority, wearing ecclesiastical robes appropriate to his position as patriarch of Constantinople. His presence conveys both the weight of his office and the suffering he has endured, marked by his firm attachment to the Nicene creed and his reputation for moderation despite his trials.
