Roger I, known as Roger the Great Count, was the youngest Hauteville brother whose elegant manners and youthful beauty belied his military prowess. He conquered Sicily from Muslim rule and established Norman governance while tolerating the existing Muslim population. His second son and successor would later assume the humble station of a duke of Apulia, though Roger himself had risen to become king of Sicily through his African and Greek campaigns.
Description
A Norman nobleman with elegant manners and the youthful beauty of a conqueror. His appearance reflects both the martial prowess that won Sicily and the diplomatic skill that maintained peace with the Muslim population. The bearing of one who has risen from youngest brother to ruler of a kingdom.
