Roger II began as the son of the great Norman count and inherited both his father's conquests and his spirit. He transformed from a mercenary leader into a king who captured Byzantine silk weavers from Corinth, Athens, and Thebes, establishing the silk manufacturing industry in Palermo. His reign saw him rise to become Cæsar, though his life ended when he was stabbed by Alani guards after commanding eighteen galleys and four great ships with eight thousand adventurers.
Description
A Norman king with the commanding presence of both military leader and administrator. His appearance reflects the dual nature of his rule—part conqueror who captured Byzantine weavers, part ruler who established new industries. The bearing of one who has risen from mercenary background to royal authority.
