Valles Marineris begins as the awe-inspiring, canyon-spanning cradle of Martian civilization and the Institute, its sheer scale dwarfing the Golds who rule from its rim. Across the series it transforms from a static symbol of Gold supremacy into a contested strategic artery, its cities and terraces becoming battlegrounds where the Rising’s forces clash with the Society’s remnants. By later books the canyon’s once-impenetrable walls are pierced by rail-lines, orbital strikes, and mass migrations, turning the scar into both a lifeline and a killing field for the war that engulfs the Solar System.
