Byram first gives the impression of a boy sure of his own nerve, his pale face bright in the moonlight and his confidence worn like armor. But there is a fragile edge to that swagger, as if pressure might strip it away.

Byram is a slightly older boy whose cocky manner fades when he is put under pressure. Beyond that brief glimpse of his character, the story provides little about his history or what becomes of him.
Description
Byram is a teenage boy, described as slightly older than the others around him. His pasty face is his clearest distinguishing feature, especially visible in moonlight. His build, hair, eyes, clothing, and other features are not specified. His expression has a cocky cast that seems less secure when circumstances press him.
