Mayalaran begins as Adolin’s deadeye Shardblade, a being others regard as little more than a weapon, though he refuses to discard her. In Shadesmar, her corded, rag-clad form becomes impossible to ignore as she follows him and moves beside him, revealing an awareness that the world has long denied her. During Adolin’s trial, she becomes more than a witness to his struggle: she speaks for the first time, asserting a voice and agency of her own. Her emergence transforms the bond between a man and the blade he carries into a meeting between two people.
Description
Mayalaran is a female cultivationspren whose face is made from thick, tight cords resembling vines and muscle. Her eyes have been scratched out, leaving a starkly damaged impression where her gaze should be. She wears dull brown rags, once a uniform, now ragged and worn. Though often huddled, she seems heavier and denser than her form suggests, with an uncanny stillness that makes her presence difficult to mistake.
