He looks like a man built for slipping away from trouble, though trouble seems to know his name. Beneath his rough cap and easy, irreverent manner is a watchful gaze—and the quiet weight of a silver fox tucked close to his heart.

Mэт Cauthon begins as a village-born trickster who wants little more than freedom, a wager, and a good escape route. His strange memories and uncanny luck draw him into a larger struggle, where he becomes a gifted strategist and the leader of the Band of the Red Hand. His marriage to Tuon binds his roving life to the fate of the Seanchan, while his loyalty to old friends keeps him from becoming merely a soldier of fortune. Through it all, he remains wary of duty even as he repeatedly takes it up.

Description

Mэт is a lean, supple young man with the wiry build of someone accustomed to riding and moving quickly. He dresses practically in a coarse wool jacket and a warm cap pulled low over his ears, the plain, weather-ready clothes of a traveler. Beneath his shirt hangs a silver medallion shaped like a fox’s head, and knives are concealed at his belt and under his clothing. His face and bearing suggest restless humor tempered by caution; he rarely seems entirely off guard.
