Under a low wool cap and an ordinary farmer’s coat, Mat has the look of someone determined to pass unnoticed—and the alertness of someone who never quite stops watching. A scarf hides the line of his throat, while his slight limp and guarded, lively bearing suggest that the road has not been entirely kind to him.

Mat Cauthon begins this part of his journey disguised in plain farmer’s clothes, nursing a bruised hip and trying to remain inconspicuous. Beneath his coat he carries a silver fox-head medallion, and his concealed throwing knives reveal the practical caution beneath his easygoing manner. His limp gradually eases as he walks, but his talent for reading danger and finding his way through it remains unmistakable.
Description
Mat is a lean young man of about twenty, with brown eyes and a quick, guarded expression. He wears a plain brown wool coat with its collar raised, a simple wool cap pulled low, and a dull brown scarf wound around his neck; the scarf conceals the distinctive scar on his throat. A silver fox-head medallion hangs beneath his shirt, while throwing knives are tucked at his belt and inside a sleeve. He moves with a slight limp from a bruised hip, though it becomes less pronounced with walking, and carries himself with wary, restless ease.
