Khadija bint Khuwaylid began as a rich and noble widow of Mecca who recognized Muhammad's fidelity and rewarded it with marriage. For twenty-four years, she remained his faithful and generous wife, during which time Muhammad abstained from polygamy. Her death deprived him of domestic comforts, and she was later ranked among the four perfect women in Islamic tradition, remembered as the mother of his children and his first and most devoted supporter.
