Deposition of Romulus Augustulus
In 476 CE, the Germanic chieftain Odoacer deposed the last Western Roman emperor, Romulus Augustulus, traditionally marking the end of the Western Roman Empire and the transition to the Middle Ages.
Outcome
The Western imperial office was abolished; Odoacer ruled Italy as king under nominal Byzantine suzerainty, ending the line of Western emperors.
