Jaxlim is a Listener mother and keeper of songs, a strong, capable woman whose humming and daily recitations help hold her family’s world together. As her mind begins to fail, she tries to conceal her condition, continuing her routines even as they become harder to sustain. Her daughter Venli’s memories of her are bound to the songs and patterns that shaped their people, and to the painful tenderness of watching a beloved parent become less certain of herself. Jaxlim’s strength remains visible even in her vulnerability.

Description

Jaxlim has a strong, fit, powerful body and the distinctive Listener skin pattern of wavy red and black lines, richly marbled across her skin. Her coloring is striking enough to make a loose brown robe seem dull by comparison. She wears practical workform clothing beneath or with the robe, suited to ordinary labor and routine. Her bearing is usually sturdy and capable, though she can appear to wobble or sit in quiet stillness. Her vivid skin patterns are her defining visual feature.
